The She’s Got Game Project
The goal of this program is to bring a group of 6 female coaches together to coach a 6-week program for a U7 Girls group of 20 players. This will give coaches the opportunity to connect with other committed female coaches in the club, and practice their craft with a small group of 6-7 year olds with feedback from our technical team guiding their coach development. These lucky players will be inspired by female role models and benefit from an affordable, high quality program with a low coach-to-player ratio.
How the project came to be
We consider ourselves leaders in female programming in Ontario. We have enough high quality players to field 4 strong, competitive women’s teams in the OWSL. We have an equal amount of female and male players overall in the 15-18 age groups, which stands in contrast to the larger societal trend of females dropping out during their teen years. We have developed many local players who have gone on to compete at the collegiate level, with a consistently strong number staying in Guelph as Gryphon varsity athletes.
Our areas of growth include:
1. Our proportion of female coaches, both for recreational (27% Female vs 73% Male), and competitive teams (10% Female vs 90% Male)
2. Our proportion of female athletes aged 14 and younger (40% Female vs 60% Male)
On April 17th, 2019 Ontario Soccer announced our acceptance to the Same Game pilot project. https://www.ontariosoccer.net/news_article/show/1013237
We are honoured to take part in this opportunity and excited to do our part in advancing women and girls in Soccer.
Our partners - the Guelph Gryphons - also provided support to our program and inspired the name of our program with their #shesGotGame initiative.
