Match Officials

Guelph Soccer prides itself on it's development program for referees. Our focus is on education and training through monthly sessions and mentorship.

Match Officials Programs We have three match official programs:


Game Leader     

Small Sided Referee        

Youth/Adult Referee


Game Leaders -certified online and officiates U7/U8 matches (5v5)

Small Sided Referee – took a SSG clinic (~ 6 hours) and officiates U9/U10 matches (7v7)

District Youth Referee – took an entry level clinic (~ 16 hours) and officiates U11 and up matches (9v9 and 11v11) as a referee and as an assistant referee, under 18 years of age

District Referee – took an entry  level cliic (~ 16 hours) and officiates U11 and up matches(9v9 and 11v11) as a referee and as an assistant referee, 18 years of age and older

Regional Referee – has successfully complete the Regional Upgrading Programand up and up and up


Be a Referee!

To become an official you must complete a certification course (usually run in the Winter months).  Once you are an official you register annually with Ontario Soccer and pay your fee. 


A few details about the programs:Game Leader

  • minimum 12 years old as of March 31 prior to season start
  • certification is completed online (~ 45 min)
  • “leads” games for U7/U8 house league, and U8 Rep
    • Monday – Thursday and some Saturdays
    • no whistle, no signals – voice is primary tool
    • Fields – Bristol, Bishop Mac, etc
  • encourage attendance at pre-season training sessions
  • Annual registration cost: to be determined – at this time there is no annual registration requirement

Small Sided Referee

  • minimum 13 years old as of March 31 prior to season start
  • certification is completed in class and on-field (6 hours minimum)
  • officiates games for U9/U10 house league, and U9/U10 Rep
    • Monday – Thursday and some Saturdays
    • Fields – Curling Club, Grange, Orin Reid
  • encourage attendance at pre-season training sessions
  • Annual registration cost: $45

District Youth/Adult Referee

  • minimum 15 years old as of March 31 prior to season start (14 if already a small sided referee)
  • certification is completed in class and on-field (16 hours minimum)
  • officiates games for U11 and up house league and Rep
    • Monday – Thursday
    • Fields – Bishop Mac, St. James, Eastview, U of G
  • encourage attendance at pre-season training sessions
  • Annual registration cost: $ 45 for ages 14-15, $60 for ages 16-17, and  $125 for 18+
