Guelph Soccer Adds Adult Programs

Feb 13, 2017

With preparations for summer 2017 underway, Guelph Soccer is looking forward to the addition of
two competitive teams, as well as recreational leagues for men over 35 and over 42 years of age. After
announcing Guelph Soccer’s affiliation with the University of Guelph and the Jr. Gryphons partnership, the
wheels were set in motion to bring two competitive teams – one men’s and one women’s, which previously
composed the Guelph Rangers, under the Guelph Soccer umbrella.

“Guelph Soccer’s commitment to ‘Soccer for Life’ represents the values that the Guelph Rangers has always
embodied, and is the most important factor in our club deciding to join Guelph Soccer. We feel that together
we can continue to grow the game in the city, but also make Guelph even more competitive at all levels.” -
Vince Pugliese of the Guelph Rangers

These elite teams play in the highly competitive Ontario Soccer League premier division. The teams will
compliment Guelph Soccer’s existing adult competitive program which included three women’s competitive
teams in 2016.

Guelph Soccer’s Board Chair, Rupesh Pandey elaborates, “Players now have a destination after graduating
from the club's youth soccer. By integrating the Rangers into Guelph Soccer, the connection to competitive
adult teams is in the city is stronger and more seamless. The Rangers are known for their long and successful
soccer history in Guelph by having competitive teams playing in district, regional and provincial leagues. We
feel that this merger brings us closer to fulfillment of our Soccer for Life objective.”

Guelph Soccer is also bringing a recreational men’s league for players 35+ and 42+ (formerly the GTO league)
on board. This increases Guelph Soccer’s participant numbers significantly, adding 20 teams and about 400
players to the club’s membership. The new leagues create more employment opportunities for sanctioned
referees, who will be mentored by Guelph Soccer’s award winning referee department. Players transitioning
from the GTO league to Guelph Soccer will get more value for their money, benefiting from the club’s
insurance coverage, administrative support, and greater quality assurance.

These leagues will fly under the Gryphons banner, reinforcing our municipal identity and alignment for soccer
in Guelph from grassroots to varsity, and beyond. Along with the Women’s competitive program, which has
been growing over the last few years, these mergers round out Guelph Soccer’s offerings, and advance the
club’s strategic objective to be a place for lifelong enjoyment of soccer, for everyone.

Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant  Helps Guelph Community Coaches

Guelph, ON – On Saturday, Guelph Soccer welcomed local youth and coaches to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the addition of new goal posts and nets at Castlebury Park. Local MPP Liz Sandals and Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Grant Review Team member David Murray were on hand to congratulate the local non-profit soccer club on the work done as a result of receiving a $19,800 grant earlier this year.

“Our government supports the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the important work they do to build healthy and vibrant communities across Ontario. With the OTF as a partner, Ontario is helping Guelph organizations maximize their ability to better our community. This funding will help Guelph Soccer deliver the best possible experience to our youth.” - Liz Sandals, MPP for Guelph

The new, permanently installed equipment that were purchased with the grant, have replaced old, worn out pop-up nets which volunteer coaches struggled to set up week after week in previous years. The fields are used for Guelph Soccer’s U11-U12 age groups and by the community at large for formal league play as well as pick up soccer. Thanks to the OTF grant, the community has access to top quality equipment for practice and play.

"This Ontario Trillium Foundation grant will be instrumental to retaining volunteer coaches for our 11 and up age divisions,” said Ted Gendron, Executive Director of Guelph Soccer. “Our coaches don’t have to spend time struggling to put up nets any more. They can focus on giving our young athletes the best possible experience in soccer.” Guelph Soccer is committed to preserving this equipment and ensuring that it remains accessible for many community activities for years to come.

For more information on Guelph Soccer and the programs it offers, please visit:

An agency of the Government of Ontario, the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is one of Canada’s largest granting foundations. With a budget of over $136 million, OTF awards grants to some 1,000 projects every year to build healthy and vibrant Ontario communities.
